Optimal feeding frequency for Heros severus (Heckel, 1840), an Amazon ornamental fish R. Bras. Zootec.
Paixão,Daércio José de Macedo Ribeiro; Brabo,Marcos Ferreira; Soares,Lourdes Marília Oliveira; Campelo,Daniel Abreu Vasconcelos; Veras,Galileu Crovatto.
ABSTRACT The influence of feeding frequency on growth performance, batch uniformity, and survival rate of severum (Heros severus) larvae and juveniles was investigated in two experiments. In the first, 200 five-day-old severum larvae with 3.20±0.31 mg and 6.20±0.39 mm were randomly distributed into 20 aquaria (1 L) and fed 500 Artemia nauplii larvae−1 day−1 for 15 days. In the second, 120 severum juveniles, 178.19±33.59 mg and 1.82±0.09 cm, were randomly distributed into 15 aquaria (300 L) and hand-fed a commercial diet (400.0 g kg−1 crude protein and 21.2 kJ g−1 gross energy) until apparent satiety for 30 days. For both experiments, feeding frequencies of one, two, three, four, and five meals day−1 were evaluated. We used four replicates for the first...

Possible applications of modern fish larviculture technology to ornamental fish production OMA
Dhert, P.; Lim, L.C.; Candreva, P.; Van Duffel, H.; Sorgeloos, P..
There has been rapid development in the marine foodfish larviculture technology in Europe since the early eighties, especially in the flat fish, turbot and halibut, and the bass and bream species. The most significant improvements in the eighties were the introduction of light control, artificial reproduction techniques, appropriate water treatment and the use of rotifers and Artemia nauplii of specific sizes and in the late eighties and early nineties the quality enhancement of live food organisms using specific enrichment techniques. Present research is focused on the implementation of several microbial techniques to improve the hygiene of live prey and fish. Many of the modern larviculture techniques being used in marine foodfish...

Production and application of on-grown Artemia in freshwater ornamental fish farm OMA
Lim, L.C.; Soh, A.; Dhert, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
This paper describes a pilot culture system for the production of on-grown Artemia in freshwater ornamental fish farms. The system had 21 culture units, each consisting essentially of three components: an oval-shaped raceway, an air-water lift system and two waste collectors. Using artificial seawater at 20 ppt for culture and at a mean production rate of 3 kg/m3 of water in a 12-day cycle, the system had a production capacity of 8 metric tons of on- grown Artemia a year. Biochemical analyses were preformed to evaluate the nutritional value of the on-grown Artemia against three conventional live feeds, viz. live Artemia nauplii, live Moina...

Souto,Cristielle Nunes; Lemos,Marcos Vinicius Antunes de; Martins,Graciela Pessoa; Araújo,Janaína Gomes; Lopes,Karina Ludovico de Almeida Martinez; Guimarães,Igo Gomes.
The optimal dietary digestible protein to energy ratio is critical for the success of fish farming. Considering that it provides the proper development of the animals, this study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of different dietary digestible protein to energy ratio in diets for goldfish fingerlings. Diets were formulated to contain 28.0, 35.0, 42.0 and 49.0% DP and 3,600 and 3,200 kcal/kg. The growth parameters evaluated were daily weight gain (DWG), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), protein productive value (PPV) and energy retention ratio (ERR) and specific growth rate (SGR). Regardless FI, all the parameters were affected by protein and energy levels and interaction between both factors was observed....

Reproductive and population parameters of discus fish Symphysodon aequifasciatus Pellegrin, 1904 (Perciformes: Cichlidae) from Piagaçu-Purus Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS-PP), lower Purus River, Amazonas, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Rossoni,Felipe; Amadio,Sidinéia; Ferreira,Efrem; Zuanon,Jansen.
The ornamental discus fish Symphysodon aequifasciatus Pellegrin, 1904, is a popular endemic cichlid species from the Amazon basin, however scientific information concerning biology and ecology in its natural habitat is scarce despite its importance on the international aquarium trade. In this study we evaluated reproductive parameters of S. aequifasciatus in natural habitat in Piagaçu-Purus Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS-PP), lower Purus River, Brazilian Amazon. Males are more frequent in the larger size classes and this might be related to the complex breeding behavior known for S. aequifasciatus. Values of L50 for both sexes corresponded to more than 60% of the maximum attained length which may indicate that energy allocation for somatic growth...

The seasonal diet of Aequidens tetramerus (Cichlidae) in a small forest stream in the Machado River basin, Rondônia, Brazil Acta Amazonica
COSTA,Igor David da; SOARES,Maiza Oliveira.
Trophic relationships in fish communities are affected by the availability of resources, which in turn is affected by spatial and temporal variations throughout the year. The aims of this study were to characterize the diet of A. tetramerus in a streamlet in the north of Brazil and compare its composition in different hydrological seasons (wet and dry seasons). Collections were performed every two months from October 2011 to September 2012 with the aid of seine nets, hand net and fishing traps in the streamlet located in the Machado River drainage basin in the Rondônia state. Most of the specimens collected were quite small (< 40 mm) and had empty stomachs. Our results showed that A. tetramerus feeds on a wide variety of items of plant origin, such as...

Tolerance to temperature, pH, ammonia and nitrite in cardinal tetra, Paracheirodon axelrodi, an amazonian ornamental fish Acta Amazonica
Oliveira,Sarah Ragonha de; Souza,Rondon Tatsuta Yamane Baptista de; Nunes,Érica da Silva Santiago; Carvalho,Cristiane Suely Melo de; Menezes,Glauber Cruz de; Marcon,Jaydione Luíz; Roubach,Rodrigo; Ono,Eduardo Akifumi; Affonso,Elizabeth Gusmão.
Poor water quality condition has been pointed out as one of the major causes for the high mortality of ornamental fishes exported from the state of Amazonas, Brazil. The purpose of the current study was to define water quality standards for cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi), by establishing the lower and higher for lethal temperature (LT50), lethal concentration (LC50) for total ammonia and nitrite and LC50 for acid and alkaline pH. According to the findings, cardinal tetra is rather tolerant to high temperature (33.3 ºC), to a wide pH range (acid pH=2.9 and alkaline pH=8.8) and to high total ammonia concentration (23.7 mg/L). However, temperatures below 19.6 ºC and nitrite concentrations above 1.1 mg/L NO2- may compromise fish survival especially...
